Casa Batlló is one of the most iconic structures in a city brimming with architectural gems. It deservedly won the 2004 Europa Nostra Award for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and in 2005 it made it on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
You’ll almost certainly have seen this building’s exterior on promotional material for Barcelona, with its bone like windows, mosaic façade and dragon-like roof. Indeed, the most common theory about the origin of this building’s kaleidoscopic design is that it was inspired by the myth of Barcelona’s patron saint, St George, and his legendary encounter with the dragon. Whatever sparked the concept in the brilliant imagination of its creator this structure is as truly Barcelonan as they get.

The best time to see the exterior of Casa Batlló is at night when it is floodlit – and its ceramic clad exterior isn’t quite as dazzling as it can be in the midday sun.
However you really are missing out by only looking at this building from outside. Buy a ticket in advance and head indoors to the remarkably restored interior. Let yourself be transported into an almost aquatic environment of meticulously designed features and remarkable spaces – you’ll realise that Gaudí’s imagination was just as fervid when it came to interiors. Tickets come with a complimentary audio guide, in ten different languages, which gives you a lot of flexibility – you can go around at your own pace, take photos, and truly enjoy Gaudí’s art.
If you get the chance to visit this building when the weather’s good, you’ll notice how the whole interior glows with natural light, particularly its mesmerising refraction in the stained-glass living room windows. Also at the top of the mansion is one of the finest terraces in the city.
As with so many of Gaudí’s creations, the details in this work are just too dense to mention, and have to be seen up close. When you visit Casa Batlló it’s easy to see why this is widely considered to be the definite work of the Catalan master. By booking with Ticketbar you’ll have the chance to skip the queues to this exceptionally popular site.
